Court of Appeal in Katowice Issues Final Judgment in the Szczyrk Gas Explosion Case

The Court of Appeal in Katowice has issued a final judgment in the case of the tragic 2019 gas explosion in Szczyrk, in which a family of eight died. The court largely upheld the first-instance judgment against the six defendants, reducing only the sentence of Józef D. — from three to two years — and awarded the victims' relatives some PLN 2 million in compensation.

Court of Justice of the EU Rules: No More Interest on Costs the Borrower Never Received

The CJEU judgment of 23 April 2026 in case C-744/24 confirms that banks may charge interest only on amounts actually paid out to the consumer — not on sums that include fees or insurance premiums the client never received. The ruling potentially affects up to 18 million consumer credit agreements in Poland.
