The Court of Appeal in Katowice has heard the appeal proceedings in the case of the tragic gas explosion in Szczyrk on 4 December 2019, which claimed the lives of eight members of one family — three generations, including four children.
Attorney Sylwia Myśliwska, a partner at the firm, appeared as counsel for the auxiliary prosecutor in the appeal hearing.
This is an exceptionally complex case — six defendants stood trial, and the first-instance proceedings commenced in September 2021 and concluded with a judgment in May 2024. A total of nine appeals were lodged against the non-final ruling — by both the prosecution and the defence counsel for all of the accused.
Given the scale and complexity of the case, the appeal proceedings were not concluded at the first hearing. The next session before the Court of Appeal in Katowice has been scheduled for 8 May 2026.
The appeal hearing marks another stage in proceedings that have been ongoing for more than six years since the tragedy. The victims’ family continues to pursue a just and final resolution.
